Dear Friend,
More than eight years ago, I played in my first drum circle. I loved it! Being in the middle of all those drums was really great. My only problem that evening was that I didn’t have one of those big drums.
They were called djembes, and it seemed as though everybody else had one. It wasn’t very many months before I had one, too.
Nothing else really sounds like a djembe. That big, resonant bass note. Those clear tones. The sharp cracking sound of a slap. Not to mention the amazing variety of muffled notes and other sounds that a djembe can make.
I was really happy to get my djembe.
I learned a little bit about playing different rhythms and got to be “one of the guys” in the drum circle. I played at home for my own enjoyment.
Then I began to wonder about some things.
- Is my drum really tuned right?
- Will it go out of tune some time and how do I fix that?
- Is that what the Mali Weave is about?
- Did I buy a really good drum, or at least get my money’s worth?
- What happens if I need to replace the head?
- Should I wax the body of the drum or something?
- Do I need one of those bags that some people carry their drums in?
- How to you wrap a drum strap around your body?
- Why do some people have bells and things on their drums?
- Why are those guys holding their drums up to the fire and rubbing the heads?
- How can I learn to play more rhythms when there’s no drum circle in my town?
- How do you know what to play and when to play it in a drum circle?
- Could I build my own drum?
That’s when my search began.
I watched what other drummers did. That didn’t really help much.
I asked questions. Sometimes this produced good information. Sometimes it produced superstition and nonsense. Even good drummers don’t necessarily know that much about taking care of drums. And they don’t all agree with one another, either. One would say one thing, and somebody else would say something entirely different!
I looked for books. This wasn’t much fun, as there aren’t many books about anything besides how to play.
Once in a while there would be a comment in a book, or on a tape, or on a DVD.
I went to a weekend seminar where we built a drum. I learned a lot there, but that was only one seminar.
I traveled. I went to gatherings where there were more drum circles where I watched and asked questions.
I found a few drum makers that I could talk to. Sometimes other folk would come and ask questions, and I’d listen to all of the conversations.
Besides gathering information, I experimented.
When I learned something I could use, I’d try it out at the first opportunity. I made some mistakes. Well… Actually, I made a lot of mistakes, but I learned something from each one.
Eventually, I got brave enough to offer to replace the head on a friend’s drum. Then I offered to re-string a drum someone bought at a discount because its tuning ropes were messed up. Soon, I became a locally recognized expert with African rope-tuned drums, and now people bring drums to me on a pretty regular basis.
And it only took eight years.
Eight years!
Don’t you take eight years to learn this stuff!
That’s too long to learn what you want and need to know about djembes. Happily, you don’t have to take as many years as I did.
I have taken all of the knowledge that it took me eight long years to gather and put it into an e-book. Besides just writing up all that stuff, I took my own drums and took pictures while tuning them. I even built a drum, using a kit I bought on the Internet, and took pictures of that, too.
So there are pictures of what things should look like at every step of the way.
You get to see what it looks like to start tuning a drum that has never had a diamond pulled on it.
You get to see how to start with a bare iron ring and end up with it wrapped in fabric with all the lark’s head knots tied on it, ready to put the head on the drum. This includes a really slick way to finish up that last knot!
You get to see how to prepare the drum’s shell and what needs to be done before you finish it.
You get to see how to position a new head and what you need to do to get it set on the drum, ready to be tuned.
You get to see how to do every step in making the Mali Weave from start to finish, including how to start a new row of tuning knots.
In other words, you get everything that a djembe owner will need to take care of the drum.
In fact, you get a complete description (with photographs!) of how to build a drum, which will also show you how to re-head a drum.

What’s it worth?
I’m not sure what I would have paid to have this information when I first bought my djembe. It would have saved me hundreds of dollars that I spent in travel and buying stuff. It would have saved me dozens of hours spent winnowing through conversations, tapes, books, and DVDs.
This e-book will save you money, time, and frustration. You won’t have to go to the lengths I did to dig out the knowledge and accumulate the experience. All you need to do is to get the book, which is priced at $19.95.
Yes, I know that’s an amazingly low price, considering the time and effort involved in putting the information together, not to mention taking all those pictures. I kept the price low because I want as many people as possible to be able to afford this e-book.

There's so much more in the whole book.
When I first bought a drum, I had no idea what I was looking for, really. I got lucky with one purchase, and not so lucky with another two. I spent several hundred dollars making those mistakes because I had no source of information to help me understand what I should be looking for. You can have the advantage of actually knowing what you're looking for and what you're looking at when you shop for a drum.
I had to guess how to play the notes, and bruised my hands many times in the process. Some mornings I was almost sorry I had played in the drum circle the evening before! You don't ever have to have that experience because you can learn how to play while taking care of your hands.
I had to pay an instructor hundreds of dollars to learn the basics of playing the drum and to get started learning some rhythms. You get many times the information I got from that instructor, and you get rhythms that you can actually play in a drum circle. Besides that, you will learn how to learn new rhythms, and where to find more rhythms to master.
I made many mistakes in drum circles because I didn't understand how things worked, and embarrassed myself in the process. You can avoid all that because The Djembe Owner's Manual will tell you what you need to know to take your rightful place in the circle.
I had to find and participate in an entire weekend seminar to learn about building a drum. You can have all of that experience, and what I've learned in the years since, fully illustrated with photographs. Whether you ever build a drum of your own or not, you will know what goes into building one properly. That information may well save you from buying a drum that you would not be happy with.
